Throughout my senior year, I’ve been working on a capstone project on a topic of my choosing. My project is about the connection between culture and language, with a focus on how the exchanging of culture is reflected in the respective languages. I also look at how this phenomenon connects to the modern concept of accent levelling. My first product is a paper on the topic. I then made an infographic detailing how the different pronunciations of Arabic’s definite article influence how Arabic nouns get borrowed into Spanish. My final product is a timeline showing the spread of the Roman empire and the creation of Romance languages.
